The African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church in America stands as a beacon of faith, resilience, and community. With roots dating back to the early 19th century, this historic denomination has played a pivotal role in the fight for civil rights and social justice. Morris Brown AME Church has been an integral part of Jamaica, NY, and the surrounding areas since 1969.

Rev. Carol Dougherty Steptoe received her Masters of Divinity degree (cum laude) at Payne Theological Seminary, M.S. in Public Policy and Management focusing on Family Policy from SUNY Stony Brook, and a B.A. in English Literature from Queens College. She was a recipient of a Sloan Fellowship, where she studied at the Kennedy School for Government at Harvard University and the Institute for Public Policy at UC Berkeley.
Rev. Steptoe has received numerous awards, including Who’s Who in America, the Peter Pauper Award for Distinguished Writing, and the Chaney-Goodman-Schwerner Award for Eliminating Divisions that Separate Peoples. She is the co-author of the book, The Obedience Journey: 21 Steps to Living a Life of Faith, Hope, and Love, and of a collection of poems, essays, and plays.
She is the proud wife of Robert Steptoe and the mother of Isaiah and Christopher. Her mission scripture is found in Ephesians 4:12, “to equip the saints for the work of the ministry to edify the body of Christ.”
At Morris Brown AME Church, we strengthen your faith through shared worship, engaging Bible study, and sincere prayer. We actively participate in impactful community service, nurturing compassion and solidarity among one another and those in the community requiring assistance. Together, we delve into Scripture, integrate its guidance into our daily lives, and fortify our spiritual connections, drawing nearer to God and one another on our faith journey.
As a church, we extend a helping hand through our food pantry. We recognize the importance of providing not only spiritual nourishment but also physical nourishment to those in need within our community. Through this outreach, we aim to alleviate hunger and offer support to individuals and families facing food insecurity. Together, let's make a difference by ensuring that everyone has access to basic sustenance and care.

THE VISION
At every level of the connection and in every local church, the AME Church shall engage in carrying out the spirit of the original Free African Society, out of which the AME Church evolved: that is, to seek out and save the lost, and to serve the needy. It is also the duty of the church to continue to encourage all members to become involved in all aspects of church training.

To meet the needs of every level of the connection and in every local church, the AME Church shall implement strategies to train all members in (1) Christian discipleship, (2) Christian leadership, (3) current teaching methods and materials, (4) the history and significance of the AME Church, (5) God’s biblical principles, and (6) social development to which all should be applied to daily living.
